Variable Hour Central Services Technician
8-hour shift 1-2 days per week
Job Overview
Straith Hospital is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Central Services Technician to support our Surgical Services team. This role is responsible for the cleaning, sterilization, assembly, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment used throughout the hospital. The Central Service Technician plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, sterile environment and ensuring that the Operating Room and clinical departments have the supplies needed to provide exceptional patient care.
Working closely with surgical staff and other hospital departments, this position helps maintain compliance with infection prevention standards, regulatory requirements, and hospital policies while contributing to the efficiency and quality of patient care services.
Duties
• Clean, disinfect, sterilize, assemble, package, label, and store surgical instruments and medical equipment according to established hospital procedures.
• Operate autoclaves and other sterilization equipment, including proper loading, monitoring, documentation, and maintenance of sterilization records.
• Maintain biological testing logs and promptly report any positive sterilization indicators or equipment concerns.
• Assemble Operating Room packs, dressings, procedure trays, and other surgical supply kits.
• Stock, organize, rotate, and monitor inventory to ensure adequate supply levels and proper expiration date management.
• Prepare surgical prep carts with appropriate supplies, including towels, washcloths, prep materials, barriers, and shave kits.
• Assist with patient preparation for surgery using proper aseptic and infection prevention techniques.
• Distribute and maintain specialty supplies and equipment required for surgical procedures.
• Review surgical schedules and anticipate supply and equipment needs to support patient care activities.
• Maintain a clean and organized sterile processing and storage environment, including routine cleaning of shelves, work surfaces, and floors.
• Adhere to infection prevention, safety, and hazardous waste handling protocols.
• Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs as needed.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare team members to support departmental operations.
• Maintain accurate inventory, sterilization, and quality assurance records.
• Assist with departmental compliance efforts related to accreditation, regulatory, and quality standards.
• Participate in staff meetings, in-service education, and ongoing training opportunities.
• Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, excellent customer service, and a commitment to patient safety.
• Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Knowledge of sterile processing, aseptic technique, and infection prevention practices.
• Understanding of medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and sterilization procedures.
• Ability to safely operate sterilization equipment and maintain required documentation.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities.
• Ability to maintain patient, employee, and hospital confidentiality.
• Ability to adjust work schedules as needed to meet patient care and departmental demands.
• Must pass background check and drug screening.
Preferred:
• Previous Central Service, Sterile Processing, Surgical Services, or healthcare support experience.
• Sterile Processing certification or willingness to obtain certification.
