Job Summary
The Manager of Social Work directs and administers the Clinical Social Work program of the hospital, including clinical oversight, program development and collaboration across the hospital system and community stakeholders. Identifies and implements the new and ongoing initiatives related to the policy,
quality and procedure detail of programs. Oversees the administrative aspects of the Interfaith Ministries Program of the hospital.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Demonstrates competency, individually and as part of the multidisciplinary team, in performing clinical care and assessment of all patient populations
A.Complies with patient safety issues as defined by the JCAHO patient safety goals:
Demonstrates:
-Accurate patient ID
-Effective communication between caregivers
-Complies with CDC hand washing technique
-Complies with NASW Code of Ethics
B.Performs and documents a comprehensive assessment of patient needs using unit-specific
assessment forms.
Assesses and accurately documents:
-Psychological data
-Developmental tasks (as indicated)
-Educational needs
-Significant person/family support
-Cognitive abilities
-Major stressors
C.Provides ongoing patient and family education
Gives information as applicable on:
-Anticipated Plan of Care
-Community resources/referrals (if applicable)
-Self Care (if applicable)
-Infant Care (if applicable)
-Integrative Care (if applicable)
2. Directs and administers the Social Work activities of the hospital.
• Provides supervision to clinical Social Work staff, reviewing clinical charting to ensure that assessments and plans are accurate and meet needs of the case, and overseeing case management to determine best treatment and need for specialized services.
• Provides inter and intra-hospital teaching to orient and provide clinical expertise in specialized areas such as substance abuse, post-partum depression and grief.
• Directs staff development efforts by offering educational opportunities to meet the demands of changing regulations and new programs/methods.
• Develops and communicates new policies and procedures as they apply to situations within the department and its services.
• Identifies and develops collaborative opportunities with other departments on new and existing programs, such as in Women’s Behavioral Health and Wellness, Domestic Violence and Early Intervention, etc., including designing programs and services.
• Responds creatively to potential new areas of service, offers staff skills and training staff to adapt and take on new areas of accountability and expertise.

3. Provides interdepartmental consultation to other clinical staff.
• Consults with clinical Social Work staff, psychiatric staff, medical staff and other departments as necessary to evaluate and recommend appropriate solutions.
• Recommends appropriate referrals, specialized programs, or other treatment to address identified problems.
• Keeps abreast of community resources and changing regulations to determine impact on services provided.

4. Represents the hospital in the community and other interagency activities in area of responsibility.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with other agencies and organizations in the community toward meeting both hospital and community needs and services.
• Serves on hospital and outside community agency boards and committees as appropriate.
• Serves as the Women and Infants Representative on direct and collaborative grants and operational programs with the Department for Children, Youth and Families.
• Updates Executive Management regarding community activities and legislation.

5. Directs the activities of the Business Engagement Officer.
• Manages the staff responsible for overseeing the recruitment and placement of volunteers throughout the hospital to ensure effective us of volunteers.
• Identifies areas of service for use of volunteers, suggesting new and creative projects for Volunteer Services.
• Gathers information to evaluate the effectiveness of Volunteer Services to become more responsive to hospital needs.

6. Coordinates the Interfaith Ministry Internship Program.
• Manages all aspects of the program to meet the diverse needs of the patients, employees and community.
• Oversees, offers guidance, and serves as a resource to the intern.
• Provides assistance in the identification and resolution of systems and protocol problems.
• Prepares and provides feedback to Interfaith Directors concerning any problems during placement.

7 . Develops and monitors annual budget.
• Works with fiscal staff and reimbursement specialists to develop accurate, cost-effective annual budget.
• Tracks and monitors revenues and expenses, promptly investigating and resolving any significant discrepancies.
• Cooperatively works with other hospital staff to creatively streamline costs and increase revenues for the department.

8 . E ffectively manages human resources.
• Participates in the recruiting, interviewing and selection of staff according to Human Resource policies.
• Ensures that new employees receive timely and sufficient orientation and training.
• Performs annual appraisal within required time frames, documenting deficiencies and developing plan for improvement.
• Effectively handles discipline problems in a professional manner and according to Hospital policy.
• Schedules and provides departmental coverage, including off-hours, emergency services, and week-end on-call.

9 . Enhances professional growth and development.
Regularly attends workshops, in-services, community meetings, and seminars relating to areas of responsibility.
Stays abreast of current developments in field of expertise by reading literature and other publications on related subjects.
10 . Preserves and protects patient and employee rights to confidentiality.
• Discusses patient and employee information only when related to job responsibilities.
• Treats patient and employee information, documents and files with utmost security at all times.
• Ensures that staff with access to patient information strictly adhere to hospital policies regarding confidentiality and maintain the highest standards of professional ethics.

11 . Performs other related duties as requested.
• Facilitates on-going professional development of employees by assuring professional accreditation and licensure are met and providing the opportunity to obtain new and recertification of credentials.
• Maintains training and teaching materials for the use of other staff or visitors, updating as needed.
• Willingly cooperates on special projects as requested
• Seeks opportunities to improve/increase services on an on-going basis.

Requirements
Master’s degree in Social Work Current Rhode Island licensure at LICSW level required. NASW or NAPSW membership required. Five (5) years post-degree experience in a relevant and responsible capacity, including supervisory experience and administrative/program development responsibilities extending beyond students placement and casework activities is required. Perinatal clinical social work or related maternal child health clinical experience is strongly desired. Short-term crisis intervention experience is highly desirable.
