The purpose of this position is to support laboratory testing personnel by processing and handling specimens following hospital and laboratory policies and procedures to ensure specimen quality is maintained and specimen testing is performed in a timely manner. Under the supervision of laboratory testing personnel, performs pre-analytical processing tasks, waived/low complexity testing, loading of specimens on testing instrumentation, and other duties as assigned.
Department Summary
The Laboratory provides clinical testing in the areas of hematology, coagulation, immunohematology urinalysis, chemistry and toxicology. Primary testing clients include the Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery, various Aultman Orrville Hospital inpatient departments, in addition to serving Aultman Health System outpatients and Aultman Laboratory Services Clients. This highly automated clinical laboratory offers an extensive test menu and performs close to 350,000 tests a year.
• High School Graduate or equivalent
• Associates or bachelor’s degree in a science or health related field preferred
• Previous laboratory experience preferred.
• Maintain limited competency in the following testing areas:
• Chemistry
• Coagulation
• Hematology
• Specimen Processing
• Urinalysis
• Toxicology
• Perform waived/low complexity testing such as pregnancy tests, occult blood, and urine dipsticks.
• Processes specimen to ensure the integrity of the sample prior to testing. Distributes specimens to the appropriate testing area.
• Order and receive specimens utilizing computer systems as needed.
• Order supplies.
• Answer telephone, take messages, and transfer calls appropriately.
• Clean refrigerators, freezers, and incubators periodically.
• Assist with inventory control, storeroom and receipt of reagent and supply orders.
• Recognize and practice the highest level of integrity and honesty in maintaining the confidentiality of patient records.
• Participate in hospital and laboratory competency and continuing education programs.
• Centrifuge and separate specimens according to test requirements.
• Monitor specimen drop-offs, check for stats, and prioritize work.
• Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments on a regular basis.
• Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and department meetings as required.
• Perform instrument/equipment maintenance according to department guidelines and manufacturer's specifications.
• Is aware of and adheres to regulatory guidelines.
• Assist Technical Specialist and Assistant Manager with duties as assigned.
• Think critically and work efficiently in high stress situations
• Communicate effectively with colleagues, nursing units, providers, and laboratory leadership.
• Uses Tools and Tones for High Reliability in order to promote a culture of safety.
