HIM Coding Supervisor

Job description

• DEFINITION/PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
• The HIM coding supervisor is responsible for supervising the coding and abstracting functions within the Health Information Management Dept including provider office, hospital clinic, and hospital outpatient and inpatient services. Under the direction of the HIM Manager/Director the coding supervisor will work collaboratively with the HIM trainer and HIM auditor for all training and auditing activities. Works on site supervising both on-site and remote coding staff.
• POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum qualifications are required unless stated otherwise.)
• Experience:
• 5 years of outpatient or inpatient coding experience is required, with a minimum of 2 years of supervisory/ leadership experience preferred. Successful candidate will be required to have strong computer skills.
• Education and Training:
• Education required to qualify for required credential. Associates or Bachelors preferred.
• License, Certification & Registration:
• CCS/CPC/COC - Certified Coding Specialist, Professional Coder or Outpatient Coder
• RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician preferred.
• Other Requirements:
• The ability to supervise and lead. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of coding classification systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT 4 and applicable regulatory requirements for outpatient and inpatient coding as required. Demonstrated ability to interact with physicians and other health professionals required. Analytical skills necessary to clinically assess medical records and documentation requirements. Analytical skills to reach appropriate decisions/outcomes required. Demonstrated ability to deal appropriately with confidential information. Proven ability to work independently; detail oriented, ability to focus on task. Ability to compile, analyze, and interrupt data to make operational decisions and recommendations. Works collaboratively with other revenue cycle management.
