Position: Telecommunicator
Department: Campus Safety
Status: Part-Time
every other weekend / varied shifts and as needed for all shifts / holidays
** Must be available to work rotating shift hours and holidays as needed. Campbell University Telecomm is open 24/7/365 and is staffed continuously. **
Position Summary:
The Telecommunicator is responsible for the operation of communications equipment and demonstrates a number of traits, concern, courtesy, patience, respect, multi-task oriented, and exceptional listening and verbal skills. The Telecommunicator is responsible for handling emergency and non-emergency requests for service and dispatching the appropriate response to handle the request from the public on a 24-hour, 7-day a week basis. The Telecommunicator is also responsible for communication functions to include but not limited to receiving calls or dispatching emergency and law enforcement services.
Must be willing to attend training classes, complete on the job training requirements, and continue training after employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Participates in operations of a two-way radio and telephone to receive and transmit messages for Campus Safety, Harnett County, Municipal Police Department, Volunteer and Municipal Fire Department, Highway Patrol, Department of Transportation, Magistrate Office, County Emergency Management Department, Animal Control, Wildlife Services, Rescue Squad, Ambulance Service, Physical Plant, Athletics, and Social Services.
• Receive request for service by telephone, radio, or in person; obtain necessary information and dispatch the necessary officials and/or advise caller of proper contact for assistance or information.
• Monitor Intrusion and Fire Alarm computer for dorms, buildings, wells, and lift stations on campus. Notify proper officials should an alarm activate.
• Monitor emergency phones located on campus.
• Greeting visitors and guests to the campus, give directions, and information and assist them in any way requested.
• Issues temporary and visitor parking passes.
• Assist Officers’ field efforts by accessing computerized information.
• Ability to maintain confidential information.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
• Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in oftentimes stressful situations.
• Ability and willingness to work a wide variety of shifts including late night/morning hours and weekends.
• Responsible for entering calls regarding calls for service into Police Pak call log, keeping daily logs, monitoring Pharmacy camera, fluent in Police Pak, Ticket Trak, Colleague, and 911 Database.
• Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, and Information Security, including but not limited to; HIPAA, FERPA and other state and federal mandates.

Education/Experience:
• High School Diploma/GED. Must be able to complete basic telecommunicator certification training and possess a certification emergency CPR/AED. There is ongoing internal training.
• Some related communications, dispatching or reception work experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Drug test and physical required.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must possess a valid NC driver’s license.
• Must pass a criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Computer knowledge and typing skills.
• Multi-task oriented, with exceptional listening and verbal communication skills.
• Must possess problem-solving skills and prioritizing abilities.
• Considerable knowledge of the operations of a law enforcement and emergency communication system.
• Considerable knowledge of the geographic layout of the campus.
• Working knowledge of the functions, practice, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
• Working knowledge of various emergencies.
• Ability to accurately receive and transmit radio communications.
• Ability to assess people and situations, to apply sound judgement to remain calm under stressful conditions and to elicit sufficient and essential information for dispatching and assisting field personnel.
• Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
• Experience in data entry and retrieval.
• Must always remain alert.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all groups through both oral and written channels.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
• Comprehensive computer skills, with the ability to learn and utilize new and emerging technology.
• Knowledge of /Proficiency with /Advanced skills in Southern Software RMS, Colleague, T2 parking software, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
• Tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials and the public.
• Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
• Exercise independent/good judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations.
• Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
• Ability to work evening or weekend hours and/or holidays and some travel for training.
• This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
