Responsibilities
The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of Morristown Medical Center, directing activity across inpatient, outpatient, procedural, and ancillary services to ensure seamless coordination across all departments and service lines. The COO oversees clinical, ancillary and support functions as assigned, establishing operational priorities, performance expectations, and accountability structures that drive the medical center's performance on clinical quality, patient
experience, team member engagement, growth, and financial results. Working in close partnership with clinical leadership, the COO leads initiatives that improve patient flow, throughput, access, and capacity management, while building a culture of safety, high reliability, and continuous improvement supported by data-driven operational dashboards and KPIs. The COO also partners with Finance on budget creation, capital planning, and resource allocation, and identifies opportunities to improve margins through growth, process improvement, and cost management, ensuring the hospital achieves its efficiency, productivity, and financial performance goals.
Role Specific Duties
Operational Leadership & Performance
• Direct daily operations across inpatient, outpatient, procedural, and ancillary services, ensuring seamless coordination across all departments and service lines.
• Oversee clinical, ancillary, and support functions as assigned, spanning a broad range of direct and matrix reporting relationships.
• Establish operational priorities, performance expectations, and accountability structures.
• Lead initiatives to improve patient flow, throughput, access, and capacity management.

Quality, Safety & Patient Experience
• Build a culture of safety, high reliability, and continuous improvement, supported by data-driven operational dashboards and KPIs.
• Partner with clinical leadership to achieve excellence in quality outcomes and patient safety metrics.
• Champion initiatives that improve patient experience across all care settings.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.

Financial Stewardship
• Ensure efficiency, productivity, and financial performance goals are achieved across the medical center.
• Collaborate with Finance leadership on budget creation, capital planning, and resource allocation.
• Identify opportunities to improve margins through growth, process improvement, and cost management.

Strategic Execution & Innovation
• Lead execution of Atlantic Health's strategic initiatives within the medical center.
• Facilitate integration of new technologies, care models, and operational innovations.

Talent & Culture Leadership
• Provide leadership, direction, and development to senior operational leaders.
• Build a high-performing, collaborative leadership culture focused on accountability and results.
• Work closely with medical staff leadership to align clinical and operational priorities.
• Foster strong partnerships across the health system enterprise and represent the hospital in system initiatives, committees, and external relationships.

Experience and Professional Qualifications
• A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations.
• Demonstrated success in senior operational roles within large, complex hospitals or academic medical centers, preferably within a medium or large health system.
• A proven track record of top-decile performance.
• Experience in a tertiary or quaternary care environment is strongly preferred.

Skills and Competencies
• Comprehensive knowledge of hospital operations, clinical systems, and healthcare delivery models, paired with strong financial and operational acumen.
• A demonstrated ability to lead large-scale organizations through complex organizational change, with a track record of driving continuous improvement.
• Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with strong problem-solving and critical-thinking capabilities.
• The ability to synthesize and interpret large amounts of quality and financial data.
• A thorough understanding of the healthcare environment and applicable laws and regulations.
• A humble, servant-leader orientation, with the ability to engage all levels of the organization so the enterprise “wins” together.

Education
• An advanced degree in health services, business administration, or related field (MBA, MHA, MBA/MD or equivalent) is required. A degree must be obtained through an accredited institution.
