Job Summary
The Senior Nursing Director serves as a senior nursing leader in partnership with physicians, advanced practice providers, operational leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to oversee nursing practice, patient care delivery, and departmental operations across assigned clinical areas. The Senior Nursing Director is responsible for strategic planning, operational performance, workforce management, financial stewardship, professional practice, quality outcomes, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and the development of nursing leaders and staff.
In collaboration with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO), Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer, physician leaders, and operational partners, the Senior Nursing Director ensures the efficient, effective, and patient-centered delivery of care while advancing organizational goals, nursing excellence, workforce engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Senior Nursing Director promotes a culture of accountability, professional development, innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based practice to achieve exceptional outcomes for patients, families, and staff.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Provides leadership and oversight for nursing practice and departmental operations.
• Develops and supports nursing leaders and staff.
• Ensures adherence to professional, regulatory, and evidence-based practice standards.
• Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and quality patient outcomes.
• Serves as a clinical and operational resource.
• Develops and implements staffing and workforce strategies to support safe, high-quality patient care.
• Establishes staffing plans aligned with patient care needs.
• Leads recruitment, retention, and succession planning efforts.
• Collaborates with Human Resources on employee and labor relations matters.
• Coaches, mentors, and develops nursing leaders and staff.
• Promotes staff engagement and professional growth.
• Assesses learning needs and supports educational initiatives.
• Encourages participation in shared governance and professional activities.
• Contributes to strategic planning, policy development, and regulatory readiness.
• Ensures accreditation and regulatory compliance.
• Participates in organizational committees and initiatives.
• Represents nursing on hospital and system-wide committees as assigned.
• Leads quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Monitors quality, safety, and patient experience metrics.
• Implements improvement strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
• Engages staff in performance improvement activities.
• Communicates results and action plans.
• Provides operational and financial oversight for assigned departments and patient care areas.
• Oversees staffing, patient flow, and resource utilization.
• Develops and manages operating and capital budgets.
• Reviews performance and financial data to support decision-making.
• Partners with clinical and operational leaders to improve efficiency and outcomes.
• Promotes a safe, therapeutic, and patient-centered care environment.
• Ensures a safe and supportive environment for patients, families, and staff.
• Monitors compliance with environmental and safety standards.
• Collaborates with support services to address operational needs.
• Manages human resources in accordance with organizational policies.
• Recruits, evaluates, and develops staff.
• Addresses performance and employee relations issues.
• Fosters accountability, teamwork, and engagement.
• Maintains professional growth and leadership effectiveness.
• Participates in leadership development activities.
• Maintains current knowledge of nursing and healthcare trends.
• Seeks feedback to support continuous improvement.
• Maintains confidentiality and protects sensitive information.
• Ensures compliance with privacy and confidentiality requirements.
• Safeguards patient, employee, and organizational information.
• Performs other job-related duties as requested.
Requirements
• Master’s degree in nursing required, or BSN with a Master's degree in a related healthcare or business field.
• Minimum of 5 Years of progressive nursing leadership experience.
• Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, financial management, quality improvement, workforce development, accreditation readiness, and interdisciplinary leadership.
• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license.
• Specialty experience appropriate to the assigned service line preferred
• Current BLS certification required.
• Additional specialty certifications as applicable to clinical areas.
