Job Requirements
Position Summary
The Risk Manager is responsible and accountable to manage the system wide risk management program to improve patient safety, reduce financial loss and improve customer satisfaction. This position oversees the risk incident reporting and monitoring program. The Risk Manager utilizes a proactive approach to facilitate risk reduction strategies and support organization wide performance improvement. Aligns and collaborates with enterprise-wide quality and strategic initiatives for the healthcare system. Investigates serious adverse events and disseminates root cause analysis action plans to the quality process improvement committee. The Risk Manager evaluates risk-related grievances and quality of care issues and communicates with the patient or representative when indicated. The Risk Manager is accountable for risk management regulatory compliance, policy review, and participation in safety initiatives. Serves as an internal risk management expert and resource. The Risk Manager is responsible for malpractice claim investigation and documentation. This position supports the insurance functions for the professional malpractice program. The Risk Manager provides on call coverage and on-site investigations as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
• Education Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare or Business Administration

Experience
• Registered Nurse with minimum 5 years’ experience in an integrated healthcare system
• Demonstrated ability to develop and lead effective teams
• Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and time management skills
• Demonstrate ability to use critical thinking skills and work independently with minimal direction
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
• Requires proficiency as a presenter, facilitator, educator, and negotiator

License/Registration/Certifications
• Current South Carolina Registered Nurse licensure

Preferred Requirements
Preferred Education
• Master’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare or Business Administration

Preferred Experience
• At least 3 years of experience in administrative or supervisory capacity

Preferred License/Registration/Certifications
• American Society for Health Care Risk Managers (ASHRM) member
• Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) Certification (if eligible)

Core Job Responsibilities
• Manager responsible to perform risk management functions for multiple facilities within an integrated healthcare system to improve patient safety, reduce financial loss and support customer service.
• Promotes patient safety through risk data analysis for process improvement to support an environment of safe patient care. Serves as a liaison to SRHS leadership on patient safety issues and initiatives. Endorses a system-wide culture of safety. The Risk Manager has the authority to intervene when conditions exist that pose an immediate threat to the health and safety of the patient.
• Mediates conflict situations and exhibits a high degree of confidentiality in managing risk information.
• Oversees a facility-based incident report monitoring program. The Risk Manager identifies and reports high risk incidents to the Risk Management Director.
• Provides leadership and education on risk management and incident reporting.
• Participates in committees and multidisciplinary teams as part of hospital-based patient safety, process improvement and risk reduction strategies.
• Performs investigations of adverse events and conducts root cause analysis when indicated.
• The Risk Manager facilitates multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement action plans in alignment with the strategic plan and annual operating plan metrics.
• Serves as resource to reduce claims and loss to the organization.
• Maintains compliance with state and federal regulations that pertain to risk management including FDA, CMS and SC DHEC reporting requirements. Is responsible for timely documentation to regulatory agencies.
• Collaboratives with legal counsel to defend the district in medical malpractice lawsuits and general liability claims.
• Provides on-call coverage for after-hour consults, and on-site investigations when applicable.
• Other duties as assigned.
