Job Summary:
The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and medication management for patients experiencing mental health and substance use disorders across the lifespan. The PMHNP works collaboratively with therapists, nursing staff, primary care clinicians, emergency clinicians, and community partners to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care in the outpatient behavioral health clinic while also supporting Emergency Department and inpatient behavioral health needs as appropriate.
This position is responsible for assessing patients, developing individualized treatment plans, prescribing and managing psychotropic medications, monitoring treatment outcomes, and coordinating care across multiple disciplines. The PMHNP promotes recovery-oriented, trauma-informed care while supporting Osceola Medical Center's mission of providing high-quality, compassionate healthcare to the communities we serve.
Qualifications:
Required
• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program
• Current Wisconsin Registered Nurse license
• Current Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) license
• Board Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
• Current DEA registration
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Successful completion of national board certification examination

Preferred
• Two or more years of psychiatric or behavioral health experience
• Experience in outpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, community mental health, or integrated behavioral health
• Experience caring for patients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
• Experience working within an interdisciplinary healthcare team

Responsibilities include:
• Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including mental status examinations, psychosocial assessments, substance use assessments, and suicide/homicide risk assessments.
• Diagnose and treat mental health and substance use disorders utilizing current evidence-based practice and DSM criteria.
• Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Prescribe, adjust, and monitor psychotropic medications while evaluating therapeutic response, medication adherence, and adverse effects.
• Provide medication education and counseling to patients and families to promote understanding and adherence to treatment plans.
• Order, interpret, and monitor appropriate laboratory and diagnostic testing related to psychiatric treatment.
• Provide ongoing medication management and follow-up care for patients with acute and chronic behavioral health conditions.
• Perform crisis intervention, suicide risk assessments, safety planning, and stabilization for patients experiencing behavioral health emergencies.
• Collaborate with behavioral health therapists, the Mental Health RN, primary care clinicians, Emergency Department clinicians, inpatient staff, and community agencies to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
• Provide psychiatric consultation and treatment recommendations for Emergency Department and hospitalized patients as requested.
• Participate in discharge planning and facilitate smooth transitions of care following Emergency Department visits, hospitalization, or behavioral health crises.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation within the electronic medical record in accordance with organizational, state, and federal requirements.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, departmental meetings, peer review activities, and continuing professional education.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, organizational policies, and all applicable regulatory standards.

• Perform other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Advanced knowledge of psychiatric disorders, psychopharmacology, substance use disorders, and evidence-based behavioral health treatment.
• Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, suicide risk assessment, safety planning, and behavioral health stabilization.
• Demonstrates excellent clinical judgment, critical thinking, and sound decision-making skills in the assessment and treatment of complex psychiatric conditions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively educate patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Ability to establish therapeutic relationships with patients while providing compassionate, patient-centered, and trauma-informed care.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, nurses, social services, and community resources.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, timely, and thorough documentation.
• Proficiency in electronic medical records and other healthcare technology systems.
• Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and composure when caring for patients experiencing emotional distress or behavioral crises.
• Commitment to continuous professional development, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
• Ability to work independently while recognizing when consultation or collaboration is appropriate.

Physical Requirements for the Role:
This position requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. The incumbent must possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate computers, keyboards, telephones, and medical equipment while completing patient assessments and documentation. Prolonged periods of sitting at a keyboard while completing electronic documentation are required. Visual acuity, hearing, and verbal communication abilities are necessary to safely assess patients, review medical records, prescribe medications, and communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
Work Environment:
The work environment consists primarily of an outpatient behavioral health clinic with periodic responsibilities within the Emergency Department and inpatient units. The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner regularly interacts with patients experiencing psychiatric illness, emotional distress, substance use disorders, and behavioral crises. The position may involve exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and potentially aggressive or emotionally unstable individuals.
