What you will be doing
The Biomechanics Department of the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking talented candidates for a five-year NIH-funded postdoctoral position.
Our long-term goal is to predict and prevent loosening of total knee arthroplasty implants, which is the second most common reason why knee replacements fail, and often manifests as progressive implant migration. In this project, you will conduct CT-based radiostereometric analysis and patient-specific musculoskeletal and finite element modeling of a prospective clinical cohort of 200 TKA patients to 1) define early thresholds of at-risk migration, 2) relate migration to the load transfer between implant and bone, and 3) assess the relative contribution of bone density and joint loads to implant migration.
You will integrate a multidisciplinary team of engineers, orthopedic surgeons, and biostatisticians.
Responsibilities will include:
• Lead collection, analysis, and interpretation of a multimodal dataset (CT, motion analysis, radiographs)
• Measure implant migration with CT-based radiostereometric analysis.
• Build patient-specific musculoskeletal and finite element models to quantify joint mechanics (kinematics and kinetics) and implant fixation (bone strain and micromotion). This includes extending and refining our modeling pipeline.
• Perform data analysis and synthesis, in collaboration with engineers and biostatisticians.
• Maintain the data storage database, ensuring integrity and quality of the collected data.
• Maintain technical documentation.
• Communicate results internally, at national and international scientific meetings, and in peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Candidates must have a PhD with strong mechanical engineering background including finite element modeling (Abaqus preferred), musculoskeletal modeling (OpenSim preferred), MATLAB, image processing, and must possess excellent written and oral communication and team science skills.
Mentoring and training will be provided by the HSS Biomechanics staff in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons from the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement service and staff of the Biostatistics Department. The goal of the fellowship is to provide the trainee with a broad, multidisciplinary research experience and an outstanding opportunity for career development.
Salary is competitive and will depend on the level of experience of the candidate.
HSS is a world leader in the fields of Orthopedics, Rheumatology, and related disciplines.
HSS is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
