Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens and other patient samples accurately and safely for laboratory testing. This position ensures proper patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, handling, and transportation while providing excellent patient care and maintaining compliance with laboratory policies, safety regulations, and quality standards.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of venipuncture techniques and specimen handling requirements.
• Basic computer and data entry skills.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications
• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
• Current phlebotomy certification preferred (ASCP, NHA, AMT, or equivalent).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Verify patient identity using approved identification procedures.
• Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections according to established procedures.
• Collect blood cultures and specialty specimens using appropriate techniques.
• Accurately label, handle, prepare, and transport specimens.
• Enter patient and specimen information into the LIS and EHR.
• Verify test orders and resolve discrepancies according to established procedures.
• Follow infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and laboratory quality standards.
• Report specimen collection issues, safety concerns, or incidents promptly.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of collection areas.
• Maintain phlebotomy equipment and monitor supply inventory.
• Ensure proper disposal of sharps and biohazard materials.

Professional Responsibilities
• Provide compassionate, professional, and respectful patient care.
• Monitor patients for adverse reactions during or after specimen collection.
• Maintain specimen labeling accuracy and patient identification compliance.
• Meet productivity and quality standards.
• Provide excellent customer service to patients and healthcare staff.

Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to perform specimen collection procedures.
• Visual acuity to identify patient information and specimen labeling accurately.
• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and potentially infectious materials.
• May require weekend, holiday, evening, or on-call coverage.
