Job Description:
The Pharmacy Technician III, Certified (Pharmacy Buyer) performs the manual technical tasks involved with the procurement, receipt, proper storage, distribution, packaging and labeling of drugs and pharmacy supplies, associated record keeping. They follow proper procedures for the operation of equipment and use of supplies. The Pharmacy Technician III, Certified (Pharmacy Buyer) maintains and coordinates systems to ensure that pharmacy operations run efficiently on a day-to-day basis. This position serves as the primary purchaser of medications, including controlled substances. They will order stock from the wholesaler daily and maintain the department’s inventory in an organized and cost-effective manner.
Essential Functions:
Provides supportive services to the pharmacy
• Ensures the maintenance of a clean and orderly work area
• Answers telephone calls according to established telephone etiquette and triages calls to the proper personnel

Assists with proper storage and purchasing of medications for the pharmacy
• Supports the drug inventory process including ordering, rotation, and restocking of drug dispensing areas with drugs and supplies
• Places orders to local wholesaler 1-2 times daily or more often, as necessary
• Completes daily direct ordering through manufacturers based on demand schedules and calculated lead times
• Processes routine requisitions through the hospital’s central supply department, as required
• Maintains appropriate drug inventory levels to ensure uninterrupted patient care; inventories supply in all areas as necessary and makes adjustment as needed
• Adds, removes, inventories and outdates medications in the pharmacy; assists with completion of annual inventory
• Maintains knowledge of all Pharmacy contracts and ensures optimum compliance with those contracts when ordering through designated supply channels

Executes hospital and pharmacy policies and procedures
• Adheres to all Hospital policies and procedures, as well as federal and state regulations
• Completes and maintains required documentation for compliance with 340B program
• Meets with vendor representatives, in accordance with hospital’s vendor policy, to discuss supply concerns, pricing discrepancies or credit receipts
• Reconciles monthly borrowed/loaned medications with other hospitals and inquires on product tracking information in accordance with Drug Supply Chain Security Act
• Maintains all records related to drug procurement and transfer, including records of narcotics or other drugs as required by law and hospital policy
• Performs any other duties necessary to promote the smooth functioning of the Pharmacy Department and maintain adequate drug stores within the hospital

Other Functions:
• Participates in the drug shortage process and informs of any changes to drug availability and status of drug shortages.
• Achieves and maintains a satisfactory working relationship with Pharmacy Leadership, Pharmacy Staff, and other departments throughout the system
• Attends departmental staff meetings
• Performs tasks under the supervision and directly reports to the Pharmacy Supply Chain Supervisor
• Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
• Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
• Performs other duties as assigned

Additional Job Description:
Education:
• High School Diploma or GED/equivalent (required)

Experience:
• Minimum of two (2) years of pharmacy technician experience (required)
• Minimum of two (2) years of inpatient pharmacy experience or five years of hospital experience (preferred)

Licensure:
• Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the State Board of Pharmacy Examiners (required)

Certification:
• PTCB National Certification (required)
