Job description

The Painter in the Plant Operations department of UConn Health Waterbury Hospital will be responsible for interior and exterior painting, surface preparation, and finishing work throughout the hospital. This role supports infection‑prevention, safety, and environmental standards while performing minor repairs and wall‑covering tasks in patient care areas, offices, and public spaces. The position works closely with Facilities/Plant Operations to respond to work requests and maintain a high‑quality, welcoming environment.
• Prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, and patching drywall, plaster, and other substrates.
• Apply paints, stains, coatings, and wall coverings according to specifications and safety guidelines.
• Perform interior and exterior painting projects in patient care areas, offices, and public spaces.
• Execute minor repairs such as drywall patching, spackling, and surface smoothing.
• Coordinate with Facilities/Plant Operations to prioritize and schedule work requests.
• Adhere to infection‑prevention protocols, including proper containment and PPE usage.
• Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and hospital safety standards.
• Inspect completed work for quality, consistency, and adherence to specifications.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory of painting materials.
• Document work performed and report any issues to supervisors promptly.
• High school diploma or GED; vocational training in painting or related field preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of commercial or institutional painting experience.
• Knowledge of painting techniques, surface preparation, and coating materials.
• Familiarity with infection‑control practices and hospital safety regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality workmanship.
• Physical ability to lift, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with healthcare staff.
• Certification in lead‑safe work practices or willingness to obtain training.
