About the Job
General Summary of Position
Provides daily leadership for the team of Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialists/Nurse Educators as they function within the roles of educator change agent consultant evidence-based practitioner and leader. Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing Professional Development and in conjunction with nursing practice and informatics peers develops and supports educational programs which foster the professional development of clinical personnel; guides and recommends development of best practices with Patient Care Service departments. Assists in the development of department initiatives in the areas of staff development education competency management supervision of associates conflict resolution and compliance with external regulatory and accreditation standards. The Nursing Professional Development Assistant Director also functions in the NPD Specialist capacity for 50% of the time exercising role responsibilities inclusive of assessment planning development implementation and evaluation of learning and development programs that enhance associates' performance promotion of professional development or otherwise support the mission vision and SPIRIT Values of MedStar Health and the Department of Nursing.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
• Demonstrates clinical expertise leadership communication skills and knowledge of education theory and principles necessary to develop learning programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes. Designs implements and evaluates designated learning and educational programs and consultative services. Assesses learning needs through formal and informal approaches to data collection to determine specific education needs of associates. Applies teaching techniques that promote critical thinking and evidence-based practice incorporating principles of adult learning theory.
• Engages in the On-Boarding and Orientation of New Associates. Plans and conducts orientation of new personnel including Nursing professional Development Specialists to facilitate effective transition to the practice environment and meeting competency assessment requirements in conformance with departmental objectives regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Supports the transition to practice for newly licensed nurses using the MedStar New to Practice Nurse Residency Program model.
• Identifies and assesses learning needs and knowledge or skill gaps of associates and Nursing professional Development Specialists that require remediation and collaborates with Nurse Leaders to promote critical thinking problem solving and competent patient care delivery. Develops and coordinates execution of education plans ensures availability of appropriate resources and evaluates and documents responses to teaching with consideration of but not limited to mandatory regulatory requirements quality and safety performance improvement and clinical advancement.
• Coordinates the development and provision of continuing education activities to expand current knowledge and where appropriate acquire and maintain certification using provider unit and other resources. Facilitate the offering of clinical nursing specialty certification review programs.
• Provides expertise for competency development and competence assessment programs across the department of nursing. Oversees the planning and execution of competency validation programs for nursing department associates. Applies principles of adult learning to assess staff learning and competency needs. Coaches other nursing associates within the department and provides feedback to enhance professional nursing practice. Differentiates between practice gaps and performance or system issues and addresses them accordingly.
• Develops evaluation plans and applies evidence-based evaluation systems to determine the effectiveness of educational activities and learning programs. Involves other Nursing Professional Development Specialists in the evaluation process. Prepares and disseminates the evaluation results of the learning activities and revises learning programs based on objective evaluation data. Reviews performance data on clinical quality and safety of care delivery and contributes to plans which address patient population-specific needs and enhance outcomes.
• Engages in career counseling mentoring and coaching of associates including the Nursing Professional Development Specialists. Meets identified learning needs fosters lifelong learning and supports career advancement in a wide-range of nursing specialties. Evaluates own practice in relation to nursing professional development and practice standards guidelines and relevant statues rules and regulations. Pursues ongoing learning and educational opportunities to enhance own practice knowledge skills and competencies. Promotes Pathway to Excellence and Magnet Recognition standards through daily practice.
• Incorporates evidence into learning programs and clinical education activities especially in content development and use of evidence-based learning models and evaluation systems. Participates in research evidence-based practice and/or performance improvement activities as appropriate. Maintains knowledge of evidence and current trends and innovations in nursing practice clinical instruction nursing education staff development and use of simulation and learning technologies. Takes action to support the National Patient Safety Goals nursing sensitive indicators regulatory requirements (i.e. DC Health TJC) and other identified quality metrics.
• Participates in and disseminates information from committees involving the community health system entity and unit or department related to learning programs projects and collaborative governance council activities. Collaborates with other departments experts and leaders both internal and external to MedStar Health to obtain information needed to purse development of relevant learning programs. Serves as a liaison with academic partners and clinical student placements.
• Participates in collecting and analyzing data to measure the success and areas for improvement in educational offerings bridge programs and other initiatives. Assists in developing strategies to enhance the performance and competencies of for the department of nursing.
• Serves as a key liaison between the Director of Nursing Professional Development and NPD Specialists/Nurse Educators to ensure effective communication and alignment of educational initiatives. Ensures that NPD Specialists/Nurse Educators' concerns feedback and needs are communicated to the Director in a timely manner and that any decisions or updates from the Director are clearly relayed to the NPD team members.

Minimal Qualifications
Education
• Master's degree in Nursing or Nursing Education from a nationally accredited nursing program required

Experience
• 3-4 years of progressively more responsible roles in nursing required
• Experience in nursing education or professional development required
• Leadership or supervisory experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications
• RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
• NPD - Nursing Professional Development certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization within 1 Year required or
• Cert Nurse Educator - CNE certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization within 1 Year required
• CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
• Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management internal departments and external agencies.
• Working knowledge of various computer software applications.

This position has a hiring range of
USD $102,606.00 - USD $196,996.00 /Yr.
