Job Requirements
The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU) Team.
The CCRU is a novel resuscitation unit for critically ill adult non-trauma patients who are transferred from outside hospitals or upgraded from within the facility and are in need of specialty care at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The CCRU, located in the Shock Trauma Critical Care Tower of the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, is staffed 24/7 with experienced critical care attending physicians, advanced practice providers, critical care registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists, and EMT-B certified technicians.
The CCRU is modeled after the highly-effective Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU) and is designed to: collaborate with referring facilities and pre-hospital transport providers; facilitate prompt transfer of patients requiring specialized care to UMMC; and deliver immediate resuscitation to patients with time-sensitive emergencies.
Clinical Practice
-Perform comprehensive patient assessments, histories, and physical examinations.
-Develop differential diagnoses and formulate evidence-based treatment plans.
-Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic studies and laboratory results.
-Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions in accordance with scope of practice and organizational policies.
-Perform invasive bedside procedures appropriate to training and credentialing.
-Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and coordinate care plans.
-Collaborate with physicians regarding admissions, transfers, and discharge planning.
-Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and goals of care.
-Coordinate specialty consultations and community resources as needed.
-Facilitate patient flow and support safe transitions of care.
Leadership and Quality Improvement
-Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on patient outcomes, safety, and operational efficiency.
-Support the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical pathways and best practices.
-Participate in peer review, chart audits, and performance improvement activities.
-Assist in achieving departmental goals related to quality, patient satisfaction, length of stay, and cost-effective care.
-Support accreditation and regulatory readiness activities.
Education and Professional Development
-Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff, residents, fellows, students, and other healthcare professionals.
-Participate in educational activities, including orientation, mentorship, and precepting.
-Contribute to departmental education programs, journal clubs, and grand rounds.
-Maintain professional competency through continuing education and specialty certification.
Research and Scholarship
-Participate in clinical research and evidence-based practice initiatives.
-Support scholarly activities, presentations, and publications.
-Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to advance clinical innovation and improve patient outcomes.

Work Experience
Qualifications
Education
- Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
Licensure and Certification
Nurse Practitioners:
-Current Maryland licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
-National certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
Physician Assistants
-Current Maryland licensure as a Physician Assistant.
-NCCPA certification.
Additional Requirements
- DEA and CDS eligibility.
-Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
-Compliance with all organizational credentialing and privileging requirements.
Experience
-Minimum of one year of critical care, acute care, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, or related clinical experience preferred. Exposure to/familiarity with ECMO, CRRT, cardiac support devices, care of the acute ischemic stroke patient, and mechanical ventilation management is strongly desired.
-Demonstrated commitment to professional development through education, research, quality improvement, certification, or professional organization involvement.
-Excellent clinical judgment, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
-Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary critical care environment
