Part-Time | Variable Hours
• Scheduled for up to 10 hours per week during the academic program.
• Work schedule will be coordinated around the apprentice's school schedule and clinical education requirements.
• Hours may include weekday daytime shifts and other approved clinical training hours as determined by program requirements and departmental needs.
• Schedule flexibility is required to support successful completion of both academic and clinical components of the apprenticeship.
• Clinical assignments may vary based on educational objectives, departmental operations, and instructor availability.
Job Summary
Through a partnership between Duke University Health System and Wake Technical Community College, students enrolled in the Neurodiagnostic Technology Program have the opportunity to participate in a paid apprenticeship that combines classroom education with hands-on clinical training.
Under the supervision of experienced Neurodiagnostic Technologists and clinical instructors, apprentices develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to perform electroencephalography (EEG) procedures. Training occurs in a variety of clinical environments and includes exposure to diverse patient populations across the lifespan.
Apprentices receive mentorship and practical experience to support their progression toward independent practice as Neurodiagnostic Technologists while contributing to exceptional patient care and service excellence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Support and Patient Care
• Prepare neurodiagnostic supplies, equipment, and work areas for patient procedures.
• Verify equipment functionality and ensure readiness for clinical use.
• Explain testing procedures to patients and family members using age-appropriate communication.
• Obtain and document patient histories relevant to neurodiagnostic testing.
• Monitor patient condition and comfort throughout procedures.
Neurodiagnostic Procedures
• Apply electrodes according to established protocols and standards.
• Assist with and perform EEG recordings under supervision.
• Adjust equipment settings to optimize recording quality.
• Conduct EEG studies in outpatient clinics, critical care settings, and Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMU).
• Ensure accurate and high-quality data collection during neurodiagnostic procedures.

• Participate in structured learning activities required by the apprenticeship program.
• Demonstrate progressive competency development under the guidance of clinical instructors.
• Accept feedback and implement recommendations to improve technical skills and patient care practices.
• Maintain compliance with departmental and organizational policies and procedures.

Level Characteristics
• Entry-level apprenticeship position.
• Works under direct supervision of Neurodiagnostic Technologists, clinical instructors, and department leadership.
• Participates in structured educational and clinical training experiences.
• Demonstrates increasing independence as competencies are achieved and documented.
• Position is intended for individuals actively enrolled in an approved Neurodiagnostic Technology apprenticeship pathway.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be enrolled in, accepted to, or meet eligibility requirements for the Wake Technical Community College Neurodiagnostic Technology Program or another approved apprenticeship program.
• Completion of prerequisite coursework as required by the apprenticeship program.
Experience
• Previous healthcare, patient care, hospital, or health system experience preferred.
• Experience requirements may vary based on apprenticeship program guidelines.
Degrees, Licensure, and Certification
• Must meet all program-specific eligibility requirements.
• Required licensure, certification, or registration may vary based on apprenticeship program guidelines.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required in accordance with departmental requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience in a hospital, healthcare, or patient-facing environment.
• Interest in neurodiagnostic technology, neuroscience, or patient care careers.
• Demonstrated academic success in science or health-related coursework.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
