The Laboratory Assistant performs various laboratory pre-analytical procedures in assigned areas such as phlebotomy, specimen processing, and other procedures related to preparing and storing human biological samples, blood body fluids, for microbiological, hematological, chemical analysis, and preparing samples for transport to other laboratories.
Responsibilities
• Insures specimens are accurately labeled and matched with orders using two unique identifiers. Follows patient identification, preparation, specimen collection, labeling and handling including Blood Bank identification policies.
• Blood specimen collection to include phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
• For written orders, assures proper and complete information is present such as patient demographics, authorized signature, correct ICD-10 code. Follows up to resolve missing or inaccurate information.
• Identifies specimens that do not meet the department collection requirements. Notifies specimen submitter of failure to submit acceptable specimens and if recollection is in order.
• Researches routine and moderately complex specialty testing requirements utilizing multiple lab resources, including reference lab, and web-based searches and algorithms.
• Performs computer downtime procedures for accessing specimens when such action is required. Actively prepares for downtime when scheduled notifications are provided.
• Organizes workload and sets appropriate priorities. Independently recognizes fluctuating workload and continuously reassesses and prioritizes work in order to meet expected turnaround times (TAT).
• Correctly stores specimens for subsequent processing: prepares specimens for transport to other laboratories using computer and manual tracking logs.
• Insures tube stations are functioning properly, tubes are in good condition and returned immediately after unloading.
• Provides laboratory related information and assistance to health-care providers, patients, family, and team members. Advises and assists others with computer based information; like specimen collection requirements, specimen test names, test requirements and expected turnaround times.
• Participates in training of new employees and students.
• Independently resolves routine to moderately complex problems and complaints. Follows up with appropriate staff and leaves written notes if further intervention may be needed.
• Adheres to scheduled work hours, arrives on time, and reports to work assignment and begins work immediately.
• Willing to change personal plans to cover a needed shift when workload requires flexible scheduling.
• Demonstrates a concern for financial strength and fiscal responsibility by supporting cost-saving ideas. Work is organized and adjusted to meet increased activity. Conserves lab and office supplies. Cross-trains in multiple lab locations for improved labor utilization.
• Daily tasks are integrated into workflow, adjusting for periods of increased and decreased activity. Insures workstations are well stocked at all times. Deliveries are stocked within two hours of arrival. Cleans work surfaces and disposes of biohazard waste per hospital and department safety practices.
• Files and records are organized, clear, and legible, immediately retrievable and inspection ready at all times.
• Reads and responds to emails and follows internet and other usage rules properly.
• Attends Staff Meetings, completes all required competencies and mandatory education as assigned.
• Seeks training, educational, certification and enhancement in area of focus/specialty.
• Demonstrates behavior standards that enhance positive interactions with physicians, peers, patients and family members
• Performs any other duties deemed necessary, required, or assigned by the Laboratory Leadership team.

Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or GED
• Completion of a Phlebotomy training program preferred

Licensure/Certification/Registration
Preferred: PBT (ASCP) or MLA (ASCP)
Special Skills/Qualifications/Additional Training/Experience
Required: Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
