Job description

Position Summary
The Lab Specimen Processor performs duties supporting the efficient operation of the laboratory, including specimen processing, patient registration and laboratory test ordering.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintains system security appropriately addressing transactions on the error log
• Communicates with the Laboratory staff regarding patients and/or specimens.
• Properly identifies patient demographics by confirmation of first and last name and date of birth.
• Clearly and accurately labels all specimens immediately after receiving the specimen and completes necessary documentation.
• Evaluates specimen adequacy.
• Send outs including processing and billing and monitoring STAT.
• Receive, centrifuge, sort and distribute as needed or rack as required.
• Responsive to courier pick up times and having all specimens packed and prepared for pick up at the appropriate time.
• Communication with reference laboratories regarding questionable specimens, then documents all received information to laboratory staff.
• Accurately registers patients / specimens into the computer system.
• Validates test requests when necessary.
• Prepares specimen collection kits for patients along with specimen collection instructions.
• Maintains positive relationships with physician office representatives
• Adheres to all confidentiality processes and HIPAA processes.
• Follows Name Entry procedures accurately at all times
• Follows applicable compliance procedures & guidelines when processing registrations (MSP, ICD Coding, etc).
• Assists with specimen receiving, responding to pneumatic tube and answering telephones. Is responsive, courteous, respectful and cooperative in completing tasks.

Qualifications
• High School Graduate/GED/Equivalent Work Experience
• Lab specimen processing experience preferred
• Intermediate computer skills, excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
• Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods with the ability to lift, push and pull

Salary Range: $16.66 - $23.58 hourly (Based on experience)
