Job description

Join Duke Department of Hematology!
Duke’s Division of Hematology within the Department of Medicine has an exciting career opportunity for a hematologist with a focus on inpatient non-malignant hematology consultation at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. This role offers an opportunity to work in a hospital-based clinical model, comparable to an inpatient hospitalist service providing expert hematologic consultation for hospitalized patients by collaborating closely with inpatient medical and surgical teams.
Candidates must have completed a residency training program in internal medicine or equivalent and a fellowship in hematology as well as be BE/BC in hematology.
We seek faculty members who want their clinical practice to have a focus on the diagnosis and management of non-malignant hematologic conditions in the inpatient setting. Clinical problems frequently encountered include acute hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders, severe cytopenias, and acute manifestations in patients with hemophilia, sickle cell disease, and other hematologic disorders.
Teaching opportunities are required across the spectrum of learners, including Hematology/Oncology fellows, interns, residents, advanced practice providers, and medical students. The hospitalist model can provide increased flexibility for candidates with research programs. Physicians with a passion for clinical effort, educational activities, and/or research are encouraged to apply.
Unique opportunities available within the Duke Hematology Division:
• Provide specialized hematology consultations for hospitalized patients with complex hematologic conditions.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary inpatient teams across Duke University Health System, including the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT).
• Active support from the inpatient hematology pharmacy team for patients requiring treatment with coagulation factor therapies, direct thrombin inhibitors, complement inhibitors, and other new therapies.
• Support from on-site specialized laboratory services providing complex testing through the Coagulation and Platelet Antibody Laboratories. Hemostasis and anticoagulant testing is available 24/7.
• 24/7 Transfusion Service support for difficult-to-crossmatch.
• Support from the apheresis service, a robust 24/7 clinical service line and research program housed within the Division of Hematology.
• Opportunities to participate in clinical research and educational activities.
• Teaching opportunities with Hematology/Oncology fellows, residents, interns, and medical students.
