Job description
Financial Analyst II
Deaconess Illinois | Finance Department
About the Role!
Deaconess Illinois is seeking a Financial Analyst II to join our Finance Department. This role supports the Director of Finance through financial analysis, budget preparation, financial reporting, and the evaluation of financial data to support informed business decisions. The Financial Analyst works closely with department leaders to answer financial questions, analyze departmental performance, identify trends, and provide meaningful insights that support the organization's financial goals.
The ideal candidate has a background in accounting and/or finance, with a strong preference for hands-on accounting experience and an understanding of how accounting transactions are recorded and reflected in financial reports. Candidates should be comfortable working with large data sets, using Excel to analyze financial information, and navigating accounting or financial systems.
We are looking for a detail-oriented, analytical professional who enjoys problem-solving, takes initiative, and can work independently while collaborating with a supportive finance team. While this position is intended for a Financial Analyst II, candidates with strong foundational knowledge, relevant education, and potential for growth may be considered for a Financial Analyst I, entry-level opportunity.
What you will do:
• Perform financial analysis to support organizational and departmental decision-making.
• Assist with the preparation, monitoring, and analysis of departmental budgets and financial forecasts.
• Prepare, review, and interpret financial reports to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
• Analyze large data sets using Excel and other financial tools to develop meaningful insights and support recommendations.
• Work with department leaders to answer financial questions, explain financial results, and provide analytical support.
• Review financial information for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
• Utilize accounting and financial systems to retrieve, organize, reconcile, and analyze financial data.
• Assist with month-end and year-end financial activities, reporting, and other accounting-related processes as needed.
• Identify discrepancies, investigate unusual financial activity, and assist in resolving issues.
• Develop and maintain spreadsheets, reports, and analytical tools to improve financial reporting and efficiency.
• Collaborate with members of the Finance Department and other departments to support organizational objectives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
What you will need:
Education
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field required.
• Master's degree preferred.
Experience
• Minimum of two years of relevant experience in financial analysis required for the Financial Analyst II level.
• Hands-on accounting experience strongly preferred.
• Experience in finance may be considered in place of accounting experience; however, candidates with a strong understanding of accounting fundamentals are preferred.
• Healthcare finance or accounting experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working with accounting systems, financial reporting tools, or enterprise financial software preferred.
• Entry-level candidates with relevant education and foundational accounting or finance knowledge may be considered for a Financial Analyst I opportunity.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and the fundamentals of recording financial transactions.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to manipulate, organize, and analyze large data sets.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate discrepancies and identify practical solutions.
• Ability to interpret financial data, recognize trends, and communicate findings clearly.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Ability to organize multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and manage assignments independently.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information to individuals outside the Finance Department.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and department leaders.
• Willingness to learn new systems, processes, and analytical methods.
