Overview
Performs standard electroencephalographic examinations for patients, according to established standards and practices. Measures by means of an (EEG) impulse frequencies and differences in electrical potential between various areas of the brain, to obtain data for use in diagnosis of brain disorders.
Responsibilities
• Performs standard electroencephalographic procedures for patients, as ordered by physicians. Performs routine EEGs monitoring on assigned nursing units and outpatient areas as necessary; tests are performed correctly and in accordance with hospital and department policies and procedures
• Explains the procedure to the patient and ensures patient's cooperation during the examination; prepares patient for procedure (e.g. prepares site for electrodes)
• Applies suitable electrodes on predetermined measured positions on the patient's head and checks their performance
• Calibrates and adjusts the EEG apparatus in accordance with standard procedure; reports malfunctioning equipment promptly to supervisor
• Selects predetermined electrode combinations as well as special combinations made necessary by the case under study
• Monitors variables (e.g., pulse, blood pressure)
• Files EEG strips in patient chart and on Neurology reference cards
• Maintains adequate inventory of linen and office supplies, reordering as required
• Provides and promotes safe and clean environment for patients (e.g., prepares examining rooms between patient visits, by cleaning examining room between patients and removing used linen); practices infection control (hand washing) for protection of patient and self
• Patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
• Schedules inpatient and outpatient EEG procedures; ensures that proper time is allowed for each procedure to avoid both gaps in schedule and undue waiting times for patients
• Checks requisition form to confirm patient name; use ID plate to imprint tracing with patient's name; confirms patient identity by comparing information on tracing to patient's wrist band
• Observes hospital policies concerning smoking, telephone use and other related rules governing conduct
• Operates equipment and performs duties in a safe manner

Qualifications
Education:
High school graduation or equivalent required.
EEG Certification required.
Experience:
1-2 years of experience as an EEG technician required.

Pay Range
USD $41.74 - USD $42.31 /Hr.
