The Director, Nursing Operations – Ambulatory Specialty Pediatrics provides strategic and operational leadership for a dynamic portfolio of pediatric specialty services across the ambulatory setting. This leader is responsible for advancing clinical excellence, operational performance, patient access, quality outcomes, and an exceptional experience for children, families, and team members.
Partnering closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leaders, clinical teams, and operational stakeholders, the Director translates organizational strategy into effective, sustainable practices that support high-quality, family-centered pediatric care. This role will help shape the future of ambulatory pediatric nursing through innovative care delivery models, workforce development, data-informed decision-making, and continuous improvement.
The ideal leader brings a strong understanding of pediatric ambulatory care, a passion for developing high-performing teams, and the ability to balance strategic vision with hands-on operational leadership. This individual will serve as a trusted nursing partner and advocate for patients, families, and caregivers while ensuring the delivery of safe, accessible, equitable, and exceptional care.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide strategic and operational leadership for assigned ambulatory pediatric specialty services, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, clinical standards, and Inova's mission, vision, and values.
• Lead the development and execution of operational strategies that enhance access, patient flow, care coordination, clinical quality, and the overall patient and family experience.
• Partner with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize care delivery and develop innovative approaches to meet the evolving needs of pediatric patients and families.
• Foster a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across assigned areas.
• Lead, develop, and engage nursing and support teams by establishing clear expectations, strengthening leadership capabilities, recognizing contributions, and creating an exceptional team member experience.
• Monitor operational, clinical, quality, patient experience, and workforce metrics; leverage data and insights to identify opportunities, inform decisions, and drive measurable improvement.
• Facilitate communication and collaboration across all levels of the organization regarding operational priorities, clinical initiatives, patient access, quality outcomes, and emerging challenges.
• Serve as a strategic nursing resource and subject matter expert for ambulatory operations, care delivery, nursing practice, and performance improvement.
• Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify and implement best practices that improve the delivery of specialty pediatric care and promote consistency across the ambulatory environment.
• Coordinate and monitor the development of long-range plans, annual operating plans, and budgets for assigned clinical areas, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources and achievement of organizational goals.
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, professional, and organizational standards while promoting a culture of safety and accountability.
• Identify opportunities to enhance care models, workflows, technology, and processes that improve efficiency while maintaining a high standard of pediatric clinical care.
• Represent nursing operations in organizational initiatives, committees, and cross-functional workgroups, bringing forward data, insights, and recommendations that support strategic decision-making.
Minimum Requirements:
• Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse
• 5+ years of progressive nursing clinical practice experience and leadership with substantial strategic and operational experience in developing and leading large scale nursing programs
• Bachelors Degree in Nursing
Preferred Qualifications:
• 3+ years of nursing leadership experience in an ambulatory setting
• Experience supporting a pediatric service line or clinics
