Definition : The Certified Nursing Assistant provides essential care and support to patients under the supervision of licensed nurses. CNAs assist residents/patients with activities of daily living, monitor vital signs, ensure comfort and safety, and promote overall well-being. Distinguishing Characteristics : Certified Nursing Assistants are responsible for direct patient care and help to maintain the physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being of residents and patients. They work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality health care and create a positive and nurturing environment for residents and patients. Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions).
• Assists residents/patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), which may include bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
• Aids residents/patients with mobility and transfers, including walking, using a wheelchair, and repositioning in bed.
• Supports resident’s/patient’s nutritional needs by feeding them, providing assistance with eating, and monitoring food intake.
• Aids residents/patients with medication reminders.
• Measures and records vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, weight, and respiration rates, and documents and reports any abnormal results or significant changes to nursing staff.
• Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of resident/patient information.
• Collaborates with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
• Follows proper infection control protocols, including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and sanitary environment.
• Adheres to safety guidelines to prevent falls, accidents, and injuries to residents/patients and self.
• Recognizes and reports any potential hazards or safety concerns in the resident’s/patient’s environment.
• Completes echocardiograms (EKGs) as directed if properly trained and participates in regularly scheduled competency trainings.
• Participates in quality assurance and process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.
