Job description
The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Clinical Nurse Specialist/Clinical Education, Mother/Baby. Reporting directly to the Director of Nursing for Maternal Child Health, the successful candidate will:
• Function as a clinical educator and nursing service expert.
• Assess learning needs of clinical staff and implement evidence-based education to enhance maternal-fetal care
• Develop and implement orientation plans for new employees and follow orientees through their orientation
• Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Professional Development to adjust the program based on evaluation results.
• Coordinate, mentor and work with new orientees and preceptors
• Collaborate with OB team to conduct simulations/drills to follow regulatory standards
• Monitor nursing care quality standards and implement corrective actions as needed.
• Attend and participate in committees to represent nursing staff needs and the individual population, and participate in writing of care standards.
• Identify staff training needs and collaborate with the ICL Department of Nursing Education to develop and implement educational programs.
• Participate in evaluating staff competency.
• Design and identify educational activities to address practice gaps for identified target audiences, including licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel.
• Develop activities to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skill, and practice. Plans educational content delivery that encourages learner engagement.
• Promote and integrate evidence-based practice (EBP) to continuously improve practice.
• Conduct, encourage, facilitate, and/or participate in research, EBP, and QI in patient care settings.
• Identify and develop strategies to facilitate a continuous maturation process through lifelong learning.
• Utilizes novice-to-expert continuum when developing staff.
• Identifies and provides opportunities for skill enhancement and mastery.
• Works with Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing to achieve annual unit goals and objectives
• Maintain staff educational log and ensure staff are up to date in clinical knowledge
Required Qualifications
• Master’s Degree in Nursing.
• New York State Registered Nurse Licensure.
• 5+ years of experience in the specialty, to include some level of supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of performance improvement and regulatory requirements (e.g. TJC requirements)
• Proficient oral and written communication skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively as a team leader in a dynamic, academic healthcare setting, proactive in planning and implementing change
• American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, NRP and Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certifications (instructor certification preferred)
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Member of Professional Organization, AWHONN
• Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training
