Summary
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Specialist RN position may be responsible for any of or a combination of the following: training, education, and quality review of respective department(s).�This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The Specialist RN uses the� Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements� to guide leadership and practice.
The Specialist RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.
Responsibilities
(20%)*�Assesses, plans, implements, maintains, and evaluates a comprehensive orientation program for all OR staff and student surgical technologists.
(20%)*�Makes�daily assignments for orientees with their preceptors and the OR control desk.
(20%)*�Conducts formal and informal conferences with orientees on a weekly basis and evaluates their progress.
(20%)*�Provides training and review sessions on various computer software used by the staff. Is the super user for the department.
(20%)*Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs for the OR staff through monthly in-services, annual training, etc.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides leadership, interprets policies and procedures, and functions as a staff nurse as needed.
Provides input on the performance of the OR staff in conjunction with the O.R. manager, supervisor, specialty coordinators, Specialists, and Sr. staff.
Participates in quality improvement initiatives within the department and the Medical Center.
Interprets policies and procedures and functions as a staff nurse as needed.
Is responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors within the OR, nursing services and other departments within the Medical Center.
Maintains high visibility in the operating room.
Promotes professional growth and development through effective leadership.
Performs coaching and counseling of employees as needed.
Coordinates and communicates with other departments educational needs that impact the operating room schedule.
Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management, surgical services staff, and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.
Participates on or leads Nursing Service committees as appointed by the OR manager.
Assures compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), American Association of Medical Instruments (AAMI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), and International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM).

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 3 years� experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting.
Knowledge of day to day activities in the operating room.�
Leadership and teaching skills needed to effectively direct a group.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Demonstrated strong leadership organizational skills and ability to set priorities.�
Perioperative Experience with 5 years First Assistant experience preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level:�Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
