Position Summary:
The Mentor/Doula is an experienced doula who serves as a clinical and professional mentor for Hospital Based Doulas integrated within the hospital healthcare team. This role provides leadership, coaching, education and real-time support to doulas working in labor and delivery postpartum, and outpatient maternal-child health settings. The mentor doula helps to ensure doulas deliver consistent, high quality, culturally responsive care while supporting successful integration into the interdisciplinary team. The Mentor Doula works closely with the nurses, physicians, midwives, lactation consultants, social workers, and hospital leadership to strengthen doula practice, improve maternal and infant outcomes, and promote equitable care delivery. This role supports onboarding, competency development, quality improvements and professional growth for new and existing doulas.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED required upon hire or transfer.
• Associate or bachelor's degree or higher preferred in public health, social work, maternal child health, nursing support services or related field.
• Completion of a recognized doula training program from NJ Family Care (Medicaid) approved training programs (Ancient Song, Health Connect One, Uzezi Village, CAPPA and DONA International (birth only) required upon hire or transfer.
• Mentor doula's must be enrolled as fee-for service providers, or working towards enrollment and obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of active doula experience supporting prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum patients Demonstrates experience mentoring, training, precepting or supervising doulas.
• Demonstrates experience mentoring, training, precepting or supervising doula, mentors or related staff.
• Strong understanding of maternal-child health, labor support, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding support, and newborn education.
• Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and advocacy skills.
• Knowledge of health equity, reproductive justice, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care.
• Experience working within or alongside hospital based clinical staff, physicians and midwives.
• Basic computer proficiency and ability to complete document requirements.
• Reliable transportation for community visits if required.
• American Heart Association BLS required within 30 days of hire or transfer.

Preferred qualifications: Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred, particularly in languages reflective of the service population.
• Experience in hospital-based doula integration program.
• Experience serving high-risk populations including individuals impacted by substance use-disorder, housing insecurity, perinatal mood-disorders, or health inequities.
• Experience with grant-funded maternal health programs.

Minimum Requirements : Successful completion of onboarding requirements, including background check, health clearance, and required immunizations.
• Compliance with HIPPA, patient confidentiality, and hospital safety policies.
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call labor support as needed.
• Ability to stand, walk, and remain present during prolonged periods of labor support.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards of doula practice.
• Participation in continuing education and annual competency review.
