JOB SUMMARY
The Board Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the Pre-Anesthesia Testing Department functions in collaboration with and under the guidelines established by the Department of Anesthesia and Department of Surgery at St. Mary Mercy Hospital (SMMH). The NP/PA assesses the patient’s physical, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual preparation for the surgical experience. Interview and assessment techniques are used to identify potential or actual problems. Education and interventions are initiated to optimize positive outcomes for the surgical patient.
The NP/PA completes pre-surgical patients health histories including identification of psychological, physical, spiritual, emotional and learning needs of the patient. Completes physical exams and orders preoperative testing according to anesthesia guidelines in collaboration with the Chairman of Anesthesia, the Chairman of Surgery, and according to the scope of Michigan Nurse Practice Act and approved SMMH policies and procedures. Conducts and documents individual patient assessment in collaboration with appropriate health care professionals.
PERFORMANCE DUTIES
• Reviews existing diagnostic results and clearances. Completes patient work-up including patient history and physical exam. Orders appropriate diagnostic testing.

• Adheres to the Department of Anesthesia and Surgery Guidelines, utilizes clinical judgment to determine the need for further testing
• Adheres to Anesthesia Guidelines, utilizes clinical judgment to determine the need for further testing
• Informs appropriate medical and nursing personnel of abnormal physical findings
• Informs PCP and appropriate nursing staff of abnormal physical findings
• Communicates with PCP, specialty physicians, diagnostic laboratories, and other diagnostic services to attain pertinent medical information to complete the health history.
• Communicates with PCP, specialty physicians, diagnostic laboratories and other diagnostic services to attain pertinent medical information to complete the health history.
• Schedules anesthesia consultation appointment as deemed necessary, according to Anesthesia and Surgical protocol.
• Performs all pre-anesthesia assessments including ASA and mallampati scoring for Pre-Anesthesia Testing Department patients and hospitalized patients.
• Collaborates with Anesthesia and Surgery as necessary to safely address risk factors for anesthesia and/or surgery.
• Schedules anesthesia consultation appointment as deemed necessary, according to Anesthesia protocol.
• Follows-up with referring surgeon regarding significant physical findings that may potentially delay or cancel the surgical procedure.
• Collaborates with Anesthesia as necessary to safely address risk factors for anesthesia and/or surgery.
• Documents H&P in a thorough, concise manner indicating appropriate notification to the PCP and/or specialty physician when abnormal findings are noted.
• Functions as liaison between Pre-Anesthesia Testing Department staff and Anesthesiologists
• Completes H&P and/or updates on the day of surgery.
• Follows-up with referring surgeon regarding significant physical findings that may potentially delay or cancel the surgical procedure.
• Provides education, counseling and support to patients and their families
• Documents H&P in a thorough, concise manner indicating appropriate notification to the PCP when abnormal findings are noted.
• Initiates and implements activities to ensure compliance with quality indicators, including proper clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.
• Completes H&P updates on the day of surgery.
• Participates in quality improvement and educational activities to ensure standards are met/exceeded.
• Provides education, counseling and support to patients and their families
• Attends and participates in Department of Surgery, Department of Anesthesia Section, and Quality Initiative meetings as requested
• Initiates and implements activities to ensure compliance with quality indicators, including proper clinical documentation in the medical record.
• Utilizes necessary interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with various disciplines.
• Participates in quality improvement and educational activities to ensure standards are met/exceeded.
• Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, developmental and cultural needs of the patient.
• Attends and participates in Department of Surgery and Department of Anesthesia Section and Quality meetings as requested
• Maintains confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees and visitors to St. Mary Mercy Hospital
• Utilizes necessary interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with various disciplines.
• Conducts practice in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Mary Mercy Hospital
• Functions as Clinical Resource for Pre-Anesthesia Testing Department staff overseeing daily staff activities, statistics, and productivity with continuous evaluation and improvement of processes and procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education
• Masters Degree in Nursing with a specialty in Advanced Practice Nursing

B. Licensure/Certification
• Current Michigan RN licensure
• Certificate of Authority to practice as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.
• Current BLS
• Current ACLS

C. Experience
• Two years clinical experience preferred
• Accurate assessment skills
• Advanced skills in physical assessment of the adult patient.
